Did the Church of Scientology Audition Wives For Tom Cruise?

The Church of Scientology allegedly auditioned multiple women to become the wife of Tom Cruise before he married actress Katie Holmes.

The entire story will run in the October issue of Vanity Fair. Writer Maureen Orth did her homework and interviewed “several sources” claiming the entire process was overseen by Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology chief David Miscavige.

The magazine claims that dozens of women were brought in to see if they were not only fit enough for Cruise, but to also see if they would be a threat to the Church. The women didn’t know they were there for Cruise, and were told that they were auditioning for a role in a training video. The interview got weird when they were asked what they thought of Cruise.

One of the women reportedly brought in was Nazanin Boniadi, best known for her work in Iron Man and General Hospital, and was a Scientologist when she was chosen by Miscavige as Cruise’s next lady. The then 24 year old was told she’d been chosen for a “very important mission.” She was then ordered to break up with her boyfriend.

While the two did date secretly for awhile, Vanity Fair reported in the issue that Cruise told Boniadi in November 2004, “I get more love from an extra than from you.” The two split and Fair claims the Church punished Boniadi with tasks like cleaning floors with a toothbrush.

Former Scientologist, Crash director Paul Haggis, has come forward to support Boniadi. He wrote in an e-mail to Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman, “Naz was embarrassed by her unwitting involvement in this incident and never wanted it to come out, so I kept silent. ‘I’m appalled that any church would treat its parishioners this way, but Naz has never cast hecrself as a victim. She is strong and resilient and I am very proud to call her a friend.”

Since things obviously didn’t work out with Boniadi, Cruise went on to marry Katie Holmes, who converted to Scientology before they married in 2006. Holmes was never part of the audition process and wasn’t involved with the Vanity Fair story either…So we may never know her side of the story…Unless she signs a money maker book deal to spill the beans.

Of course Tom Cruise has been hushed on this whole thing and his reps only had one thing to say, “Lies in a different font are still lies – designed to sell magazines.”
