Gabby Douglas Debuts New Hair, but Critics Are Still Talking

Gabby Douglas Debuts New Hair, but Critics Are Still Talking

Olympian Gabby Douglas premiered a new, sleek hairstyle this week as she returned from the London Games after her gold medal wins…And critics are still dissing her locks!

When you win not one, but two gold medals in the Olympics, become the first African American to win the all-around and team gold, people are supposed to praise your talent, not break you down for your appearance. Unfortunately that’s what it’s been like for Douglas. At just 16 years old, she’s gotten just as much attention for her hair as Bieber got for his when he finally cut the swiped style. Only this time people are being extremely negative no matter how Douglas looks.

When she won two gold medals, critics were peeved that her ponytail looked unkempt. Douglas responded that people shouldn’t care about her hair. But now that she’s back and hitting the press tour, she underwent a makeover and is still getting hate mail over her hairdo.

She went to celebrity stylist and What Not To Wear star, Ted Gibson for a beautiful new head of hair, and people are still not happy because now it appears that she only changed her hair because of the public scrutiny from the London Games.

Maybe she didn’t care what people had to say and just wanted to look nice for the publicity stops she has coming up, including the Tonight Show, The Late Show and America’s Got Talent.

Not one to show she cares about the hate she’s receiving, Douglas hasn’t spoken up about the new wave of critics and only talks of the real news, her wins, “I was just so happy representing Team USA and being up on the podium.”

Unfortunately, the majority of the negative comments come from other African-Americans. They cannot stand to see successful, articulate, talented young women (or men) who are succeeding at a sport not commonly know for high participation by African-Americans. Gabby does not ‘talk’ like she is from the ghetto. She is motivated, a Christian, and when it came out that she was also a Conservative, THAT was the kiss of death to any appreciation or acknowledgment she may have garnered from most other African-Americans. This was a ‘high-tech’ lynching of poor Gabby, just like it was with Clarence Thomas, Allen West and Herman Cain!

I agree that it’s terrible that these comments come from African Americans. We should definitely focus more on uplifting each other rather than tearing each other down. However, I don’t believe this has anything to do with the fact that she’s a conservative….and even if she did “talk like she’s from the ghetto” as you put it…that would not take away from her accomplishments and what she represents. Also, Herman Cain wasn’t criticized simply because he was a conservative. He was criticized because he was an idiot…if I must say so myself. However, he did make for great entertainment. :)
