Elton John Band Member Robert Birch Dead from Apparent Suicide
Details are still coming in on the shocking death of musician Robert Wayne Birch, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound this morning in Los Angeles. Burch, who had played bass guitar for Elton John and other famous performers, was only 56.
According to TMZ, Birch’s body was discovered around the corner from his residence, and no suicide note has been found.
Birch had been in John’s band since 1992, and had also played with a long list of artists including Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Sting, LeAnn Rimes, Tina Turner, John Mayer, Cher and Stevie Wonder.
Birch was born in Detroit, and began playing the electric bass in seventh grade. In 1981, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a musician, finding his first major gig with Japanese jazz pianist Akio Katsuyama.
He is survived by his wife Michele and son Jonathan.
