Jennifer Lopez Exits “American Idol”, Reacts to TomKat Divorce
Jennifer Lopez says adios….
There are two vacant seats at the judges’ table of “American Idol,” as Lopez has announced her departure from the show just one day after Steven Tyler called it quits. Were these exits voluntary—or were they fired?
After weeks of rumors, Jennifer Lopez made it official this morning, calling Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to reveal that she would not be returning for the next season of Idol. The singer/actress said, “I honestly feel that the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I put kind of on hold because I love ‘Idol’ so much.”
“You have a lot of other responsibilities, and a lot of other things that you do and you have to pay attention to that too…I could keep just doing ‘Idol’ for the rest of my life, but that would be giving up a bunch of other things. We had an amazing run.”
Neither Lopez nor Tyler will be standing in the unemployment line, but you have to wonder if both were really ready to leave such a cushy gig right now. If it had just been Tyler departing to get back to touring with Aerosmith, that would be easy to understand, but two departures in as many days makes one suspect the producers of “Idol” are cleaning house because of the show’s falling ratings.
Will Randy Jackson be the next to go? And what stars will be joining the show next season? Names being considered include Mariah Carey and former “Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert.
As she plans for her own future, Lopez took time to express her sympathy for friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who recently split. Recalling her own divorce from Marc Anthony, she told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m sad for them. They’re both really lovely people, and just like Marc and I, it’s not what you want to happen. You fight and you try and you try until you realize you can’t anymore.”
“You know I just wish them peace in their decision.”
