Tom Cruise – Who Knew?! (Homosexuality Lawsuits and More!)

Tom Cruise hasn’t had such a great month. First, his “Rock of Ages” movie flopped at the box office, and today, Cruise was served with divorce papers by his young bride Katie Holmes.

The couch-jumping romance is dead, but can his career rebound? While we wait for the actor’s next action flick to hit the screen, here are a few facts about his life and career.

-Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in Syracuse, NY and will be turning 50 next week. As a child, Cruise was abused by his father and later bullied in school.

-Cruise got his first starring role in the 1983 teen comedy “Losin’ It.” Later that year, roles in “All the Right Moves” and “Risky Business” cemented his status as a superstar.

-Cruise scored his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of paralyzed Vietnam vet Ron Kovic in the 1989 film “Born on the Fourth of July.”

-After a two-year relationship with “Risky Business” co-star Rebecca DeMornay, Cruise wed the six-years-older actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. The pair divorced a few years later. Rogers claimed the marriage was doomed by the actor’s lack of a sex drive. She stated:

“He was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. He thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument, but my instrument needed tuning, and we had to split.”

-In December 1990, Cruise made his “Days of Thunder” co-star Nicole Kidman his second wife. During the ten-year marriage, the couple adopted two children, Isabella Jane and Connor Anthony. The pair officially separated in early 2001.

-Cruise has been involved with Scientology since 1990, and is an outspoken advocate for its beliefs. In 2004, the actor aroused controversy by saying, “I think psychiatry should be outlawed.” His devotion to Scientology led to his estrangement from longtime publicist Pat Kingsley.

-In April 2005, Cruise began dating young actress Katie Holmes and a month later made his infamous couch-jumping appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” By fall, Katie was pregnant and daughter Suri was born in April 2006. That November, Cruise and Holmes wed in a lavish Scientology ceremony in an Italian castle. On June 29, 2012, Holmes filed for divorce.

For years, Cruise has been hounded by rumors about his sexuality, and has sued a porn star, a British tabloid, and a magazine publisher for claiming he was gay.
