Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey Discuss Male Strip Club Experience
One of the summer’s most highly anticipated films is “Magic Mike,” probably because you get to see some of Hollywood’s hottest hunks baring (almost) all as male strippers! Inspired in part by star Channing Tatum’s brief foray into exotic dancing in his younger days, the film opens on Friday, so its stars are all over the place, doing interviews.
Tatum and Matthew McConaughey researched their roles by visiting a male strip club in New Orleans last year, and shared their experiences with the L.A. Times.
“We drive out of town. It’s down, down. It’s not on Bourbon Street. It’s Out. Of. Town. It’s in a strip mall between you know, Gonzalo’s tacos and a laundromat, and a mattress store,” McConaughey recalled. “So we get there early, we’re sitting there talking to a couple guys. They’re decent enough guys—one’s a lawyer, the other one’s back from the armed services, he’s got three kids at home…. Anyway, women start coming in, most of them are older women, we sneak into the back, and all of a sudden boom! These guys are coming out on stage, they’re dancing!”
The show’s production was a bit sloppy, which inspired McConaughey to raise the bar with his role as Dallas, the owner of the strip bar. He explained, “The production in there—it was just poor production. I mean, the sound cues, the record scratch, the lighting, there was nothing running. None of the women seemed to care, But that’s when I was like, ‘All right, my guy Dallas is the emcee, he’s the master of ceremonies, he’s producing this review, he’s choreographing, and we’re gonna run this thing tight, baby!’”
Tatum did his part to promote the film by appearing on the “Today” show Wednesday morning to show off a few of his best moves. He also revealed how he had mixed feelings about his short career as a male stripper. “Man, it was a crazy time in my life. I’m not ashamed of it, but I don’t know if I’m—proud of it. It was definitely a crazy part of my life, and I survived it.”
We’ll get to see the two stars strut their stuff in theaters starting this weekend!
