NBA High Heels, For Fans or Groupies?

NBA merchandise just got a little more stylish with the introduction of NBA themed high heels.
The NBA has teamed with an Orlando, FL company, Herstar, to bring female fans their favorite teams in heel form. CEO of Herstar, Holly Joffrion, has said:
“We look forward to offering sports fans a high-end line of fashionable heels. We understand how much women love their shoes and recognize that going to an NBA game can be an event beyond the hardwood. We’re able to combine the love of basketball and footwear together, allowing female fans another way to display their passion for the game.”
The footwear was initially waiting on licensing, so if you’re looking to get a pair ASAP, don’t count on it. They have 100’s of orders currently on backorder.
All 30 teams are onboard to give female fashionistas what they want. They can choose between the $249.99 6 in. Swarovski crystal covered pair, or the micro-suede pump with a four-inch heel that sells for $99.99. Herstar will also customize shorter pairs for those who can’t manage the 4 in. heel.
But are these shoes for diehard fans or ladies looking to score with an NBA MVP? That’s up for debate. There’s evidence to say female fans want them and Vicky Picca, the NBA’s senior vice president of licensing and business affairs has said:
“Our female business has tripled over the last five years and what our fans were saying is that they no longer wanted a pink version of a male product,” said Picca. “This appeals to our savvy female consumer.”
Women simply don’t want the “feminine” version of the merchandise anymore. You know the pink jerseys? On the other hand, there are sites dedicated to tracking down athletes for courtship (no pun intended). So these shoes could just be sparkly bait for “fans” to snag a player. The mentality being that they’re not only a beautiful girl in sexy footwear, they’re in sexy footwear that showcases support for their team.
If you’re a fan, you should be at the games with the intention to watch the game, not to walk a runway. But one can see the want for fan footwear outside of the game. Who doesn’t want to go out and show their support in club wear? They can’t wear Nike’s with a micro mini and still look as hot as they want, can they?
In the end, the shoes are probably for both fans and fangirls looking to score. The only difference is a real fan probably won’t wear these to the games because they’re there for the sport, not the hook up.
