Greatest Movies of All Time: “The Departed”
Written by: Nolan Collins
First up, “The Departed” directed by the great Martin Scorsese. This film follows two cops. One of which is a snitch for the cops in a criminal organization, while the other is a snitch for the criminal organization in the cops.
The obvious reason that this is one of the best movies ever is the cast. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, and Alec Baldwin… wow! They are all superb, as usual. But, beyond the cast, this film is great because it transcends genre. It is not just a gangster flick. It has comedy, action, romance, drama, hints of film noir and western; there’s something for everyone!
I don’t always agree with the Academy Award picks for best picture, but in 2006, they got it right. Martin Scorsese has been nominated many times, but he’s only won one Oscar, and it is a well deserved Oscar.
I still haven’t seen the Chinese film that it is based on (“Infernal Affairs”) but I really would like to.
Come back to see some more of my picks and read about why they are the “Greatest Movies of All Time.”
-
AMAZING FILM!
-
shocking ending
-
it was a unique movie and the ending left my mouth hanging for a couple of days
-
Why should it be considered the greatest movie of all time if it was > 80% copied form the original Chinese version???? Credit should be given to the Chinese directors as well. Hollywood these days have no originality.

I haven’t seen the Hong Kong original, Infernal Affairs, but I am trying to find it. I’m sure it’s great as well. But just because this film is based on another film, doesn’t keep it from being great. Take the classic “Psycho” for example. Gus Van Sant’s remake was terrible despite copying almost 100% of the amazing original. But I do have to agree with you on the fact that Hollywood seems to quickly be running out of ideas… Battleship, really?!

I would not classify it as the greatest film ever, but it had the most unexpected twist in movies I’ve seen since Face Off. It leaves you saying ” Huh” I just thought of Liam Neeson in “Unknown” whew!!!!!! Rent it! Stream it! Netflex it, just see it!
